One Day Workshop
on
R for Beginners
on November 15, 2014

A workshop on R for Beginners was organized by the Department on November 15, 2014. R is an important software for statistical analysis.

The major advantage of R is that it is free and open source software. It is cross platform compatible. Being an open source software, R is developed over a period of time through contribution of various programmers and statisticians across the globe. Advantage of R is that it has huge capabilities of using already developed programs that are available from the R repositories as well as adding one’s own program to it.

R has huge graphic capabilities. The graphics package developed specially to cater to the needs of various kinds of diagrammatic representation is amazing. R is one of the most advanced statistical programming language and is used in many leading Universities and academic institutions across the globe.

R is comprehensive. It is modular and light weight. It consumes very less resources of the computer. R supports a large number of extensions as well as data structures. Data from SPSS, SAS, Excel, Gretl etc. can be imported in to R. One can work with vectors, scalars and matrices with R. Theoretical and numeric mathematical computations are possible, over and above, statistical analysis in R.

R has a vast community and members of the community interact with each other to provide solutions to problems in using R. The community comprises students, teachers, academicians, researchers and the discussions take place through forums, social and professional networking channels.

The basic objective of this workshop was to acquaint the participants with the use and capabilities of R software and to ensure that awareness of R is spread across the teaching and research fraternity in the region.

Dr A Subbarao, Professor Department of Economics, M S University of Baroda, Vadodara, Dr Prashant Joshi, Professor, Management Department, Uka Tarsadia University and Dr Smruti Bulsari from Department of HRD rendered their services as resource persons in this workshop.

Participants from across the Gujarat state participated in this workshop and they informed us that they were highly benefitted from this workshop. They got interested into understanding the working and use of R. They also told us that they will be attending the workshops on R in future too.
